The Cocoa Trees Travel Bag
Case Study of the The Cocoa Trees work commissioned with D'Arts and Designs. The story of how we worked with The Cocoa Trees to design and manufacture their Travel Bag
The Cocoa Trees is a well known retail chain of stores of chocolates and confectionery in Asia, with a strong presence at airports. They call themselves - the best candy shop in Singapore.
A tourist who is shopping for gifts to take back home at the airport would also need a bag to carry them in. A practical solution would be combine the two requirements to create a gift that is beautiful, useful and uplifts the brand. Hence, the approached us with an idea to run a campaign at the airport stores where they gave out a free travel bag to purchase above a certain amount. A free gift always gives the customers an immediate incentive to shop.
The reason Cocoa Trees approached us is because D'arts and Designs has a history of working with brands with a purpose to provide high quality eco-friendly solutions for bags and aprons.
They wanted to create a product that is of superior quality but at the same time, within a price range that is reasonable for a free giveaway on purchases of chocolates. The material had to be eco-friendly, the design aesthetic and the final product something a customer would cherish. All this had to be achieved within 5-6% of the purchase value to be economically feasible too.
The bag was designed and went through a few iterations. We helped with the sampling at every stage. A physical sample could help to visualize the final product and also estimate the costing more effectively. To make a product that is truly valuable needs time and effort. Here is what the first sample looked like:
These samples were delivered to the client within 2 weeks. Client was very happy with the physical realisation of their vision. They loved the colours and print. The jute fabric was unlaminated and had a cotton lining inside. The finished product looked very good for their promotions but they wanted to explore another more structured option.
Hence we went back to the drawing board. Upon further discussions, we presented an option of another fabric called laminated juco. This would be smoother to the feel but have a stiffness needed for it to be standalone. They also wanted it to have a sleeve that could be slid into the handle of a cabin bag to be easily dragged with it. D'Arts and Designs worked closely to understand their requirements and after another round of careful sampling, the below design was picked by the client for a mass production of 7500 pieces each.
These bags were a great hit with their customers. They quickly sold off and client came back to us to make some more in the other materials like non woven and laminated canvas.
Next order was a 20000 lot of non woven bags with heat sealed handles, vibrantly printed with a traditional print. This is a great option for cheaper bags for every purchase.
The greatest validation of our work is when a satisfied customer returns with a new design for another campaign. It is always exciting to see a new campaign take shape and for us to be a part of it.
For this last model, the client went with a clean structured look in natural laminated canvas.
The piping and handles were dyed to their corporate green colour. The aesthetics were very corporate but playful at the same time.
A durable jute or canvas carrier is a great brand identity as it lasts long and will be carried around by users for many hundreds of users to see and revalidate. Making an ecobag for your brand is a brag that no self respecting corporate should be missing out!
